Dumb Things People Say to Publicists

“I want to be on Rachael Ray.” This usually comes from someone who has not been on television whatsoever. Here is the deal people: unless you are part of some national drama this is not going to happen. Or, you are part of a very big story of national interest. Most national shows want national experience. At the very least, they want to see what you have done previously. This is where you website is important and why you need to list all press no matter how small. Local television experience is especially good if you are on a news show that gets picked up in many different markets (thank you FOX). Anyway, if the national demand is the first thing out of your mouth most likely you A. Will have bad PR Karma (Zero coverage), and B. Your publicist will end up firing you and at the very least you will get some eyeballs rolling when you are not in the room. Our point? Be Smart first, and ask this question second.

  1. I coach authors how to get on TV and I have to say you know your stuff. Thanks for that. Edward Smith.

Thank you for your comment. I actually heard “I want to be on Oprah” early this week, and I had to explain she was on “OWN” now. I am sure you have heard it all too – please stay in touch. Best, Michele
