Dumb Things People Say To Publicists

I want to be on Rachael Ray. This usually comes from someone who has not been on television whatsoever. Here is the deal people: unless you are part of some national drama this is not going to happen. Or, you are part of a very big story of national interest. Most national shows want national experience. At the very least, they want to see what you have done previously. This is where you website is important and why you need to list all press no matter how small. Local television experience is especially good if you are on a news show that gets picked up in many different markets (thank you FOX). Anyway, if the national demand is the first thing out of your mouth most likely you A. Will have bad PR Karma (Zero coverage), and B. Your publicist will end up firing you and at the very least you will get some eyeballs rolling when you are not in the room.

I am too good and won’t do local television. This again normally comes from someone who doesn’t have television experience whatsoever. And, why wouldn’t you want the local exposure if it is going to benefit your book, business, etc. I have one client right now who is driving to Sacramento to be on FOX next week. Why? Well, for starters he is going to be on the 8 o’clock and 9 o’clock hour, and he gets the importance of public relations. I personally want to clone him and let’s say I didn’t hire the person who said this to me last year.

Wow, you are expensive. These are real facts. If you hire a large public relations agency you are looking at a retainer of 3K – 5K per month. If you are looking at a boutique one such as my company, you are looking at an hourly rate. This is because I love working with small business owners. Before you say this to any public relations person, please do yourself a favor and call your favorite magazine and ask how much it will cost to take out a full-page color advertisement. Will you have sticker shock? Um, yes. And, if you cannot afford a publicist check out PR-You. Yes, I just plugged my new company.
