If you are an author or entrepreneur, you need a laugh buddy. At M Communications and M Com Publishing, we are fortunate enough to have a pretty darn funny team and more importantly some pretty darn hilarious strategic partners. We are launching a new division of M Communications in the next month and I am fortunate enough to partner with a fellow PR pro on our next upcoming endeavor and we shared the following laughs. Here is what your publicist does not want to hear:
1. I want to be on Oprah. According to my gal pal, and direct quote I may add, “If I had a penny each time a client said this, I would be retired.” Good thing Oprah is no longer on prime time. Unfortunately for the PR people out there … well, now there is OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). This brings me to point number 2.
2. I want my own show on OWN. Mind you most of theses requests come from people with zero television experience and really think they can be on the OWN network. Self-delusion is a popular thing. My last point ….
3. How is the campaign going? This is usually asked 3 hours after a press release has been sent out to the media. PR should have patience somewhere in the word. You do not immediately get coverage (unless your story is THAT good) and sometimes it takes a couple of rounds. Give your PR peep some time to do his/her job. Also, if there is major breaking news and you are promoting your new nail product – breaking news will trump you every time.
My point? Have a laugh buddy in your line of work.
