The best way to not make a good first impression at an event is to not follow the rules. And, if you are not sure just ask. We were recently at an event where the speaker outlined how the networking sessions were going to work. Specifically, talk about your personal interests first and a little about your business last. Not only did someone completely not follow these rules and talk about their chiropractic business for five minutes to the annoyance of the group, she then proceeded to talk about her husband’s bowel movements (yuck) for the remaining two. My advice? Follow the rules and stay away from the too personal – especially when others are eating lunch.
