Public Relations screw ups are not uncommon. We have seen Kanye West pulling some super fun ones at award ceremonies and do not get me started on Lindsay Lohan. Now, these are celebrities who are constantly in the public eye (which I cannot imagine ), so I honestly need to give these peeps at little leeway for acting crazy. As an entrepreneur/business owner however, you are held to a different standard and seriously, most cannot afford to make these kinds of Public Relations mistakes. The ultimate do-not-do is to not cancel your television spot at the eleventh hour. Most business owners love to be on television, so the concept to me as a seasoned publicist is ridiculous. Here is why:
1. You will never be on the scheduled station again.
2. Your publicist looks incompetent … that’s not a good thing.
3. Your publicist will quite possible lose all credibility with said producer and may not even be able to book a spot at the specific station again.
My advice? Don’t do it and send a replacement for your interview if you cannot make it.
