When you send out a newsletter, like the M-Dash (sign up here), really pay attention to what you are saying. Yes, I am normally sarcastic and cracking jokes, but I am very mindful of my audience and what I am talking about. Here are a couple do-not-do’s.
1. Do not talk about people on your mailing list. Now, every once in awhile I get an email saying are you talking about me? And, the answer is “no”. I know who is on my list and if I am using someone or something as a bad marketing example it will not pertain to anyone I know. And, I know who opens and reads my newsletter – thank you Constant Contact.
2. Do not say anything about someone, especially a mutual colleauge that is untrue. Eight degrees of separation applies to your newsletter, so most likely someone on your list knows someone you are blantantly talking about. This will get back to that person and you will end up looking severely unprofessional, along with incorrect and catty.
3. Do not fire someone via newsletter or via other’s peoples newsletter. If you are going to do this, I highly recommned you unsubscribe them first. I can assure you, they will find out about it.
